Heavy-quark spectroscopy has entered a new era. LHCb has now observed all three doubly charmed baryons in the spin-1/2 sector, completing the set with the $\Omega_{\mathrm{cc}}^{+}$ earlier this year, and ATLAS has recently reported the $\mathrm{B}_{\mathrm{c}}^{*+}$. Doubly charmed spin-3/2 baryons and baryons containing a bottom quark together with other heavy quarks, however, have yet to be discovered. These systems are among the cleanest probes of how QCD binds heavy quarks, and reliable theoretical predictions can guide future searches. In this talk, I will present first-principles lattice QCD calculations of the heavy-baryon spectrum. For singly and doubly charmed baryons, calculations at several lattice spacings allow a controlled extrapolation to the continuum and a direct test against experiment. In the bottom sector, using very fine lattices, we treat the bottom quark fully relativistically, without the effective-theory approximations of earlier work, and predict the masses of the $\Omega_{\mathrm{bbb}}$, $\Omega^{*}_{\mathrm{bbc}}$, $\Omega^{*}_{\mathrm{bcc}}$, $\Omega^{*}_{\mathrm{bb}}$ and $\Omega^{*}_{\mathrm{bc}}$. I will discuss how these results compare with previous calculations and models, and what they imply for experimental searches.
The colloquium will be streamed but not recorded.
