Novel Techniques and Challenges in Heavy Ion Therapy
Thomas
Haberer (University of Heidelberg)
Whilst
ion beam therapy has stepped into the clinical environment hospitals
with moderate patient numbers only do not meet the business plan
requirements of multi-vault facilities. Consequently the technology
suppliers have started the development of single room installations as
well as scalable facilities having moderate footprints. The desirable
compactness may be achieved by introducing superconducting accelerator-
and beamline-technology in order to increasing the bending radii and
thus the building dimensions. In parallel to the development of compact
facilities the optimization of the various aspects of the treatment
process is a challenging and ongoing activity.
