Computational Neurosciences and Complex System Theory

A cognitive system is a percepting and autonomously acting dynamical system. It is influenced, but not driven by sensory input, its self-generated internal dynamics plays therefore a central role.

We are developing organizational principles for autonomous cognitive systems. Examples of organizational principles are polyhomeostasis, a generalization of homeostasis, and diffusive emotional control, an instance of meta-learning. [more]

Sensory-Motor Loop and Simulated Robotics

We study the generation of self-organized motor primitives within the sensory-motor loop through overarching principles.

These principles are implemented in embodied simulated and real-world robots and studied subsequently within dynamical systems theory. We find, that complex behavioral patterns may emerge from simple generating principles (videos). The resulting possibility of 'kick control' contrast with the standard perspective of objective-controlled movements. [more]

The Genesis project

I have studied the feasibility of an interstellar mission, which would lay the foundations of a self-developing ecosphere of unicellular organisms on otherwise life-less exoplanets. This proposal motivates us to reconsider the role of humanity in a larger context.
  • Shall humanity take an active role in our corner of the galaxy?
  • Which ethical aspects are involved, when helping life to flourish elsewhere?
  • Why should we undertake an endeavor without tangible benefit for humanity?
The Genesis project has seen a substantial media resonance. We showed in conjunction that interstellar probes may be decelerated using magnetic sails.

The Genesis project has a connection with a fantasy novel I am currently writing (in german): Mageia, das Buch der Farben. The story plays out in world which is constantly changing und where magicians may influence the feelings of others (Amazon, tredition).

Long-term thinking is important both for the back story of Mageia and for the Genesis project.
