I will discuss recent progress in the holographic description of the thermalization dynamics taking place in heavy ion collisions. Particular emphasis will be placed on attempts to go beyond the usual limits of infinite coupling and exact conformal symmetry, inherent in the supergravity dual of $N=4$ Super Yang-Mills theory. In particular, I will argue that taking into account strong coupling corrections to the dynamics of the system may take its thermalization pattern from the usual top-down limit towards bottom-up behavior.
